Summer Program Open Enrollment

Summer is more than just a break from the classroom—it’s the perfect time for academic growth.

At VIL Academy, the summer months represent a rare, distraction-free window for students to engage with English Language Arts (ELA) fundamentals, critical thinking and analysis, and test prep strategies. Students who utilize this time effectively often start the school year with significantly higher confidence and academic momentum. Whether a student is mastering the basics in 3rd grade or tackling the intense challenge of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) and Academies of Loudoun (ACL) admissions or preparing to take the SAT or ACT, VIL Academy offers a specialized path to success.

Why Choose Summer Enrichment?

Summer study provides the tools to succeed without the pressure of a full school day. VIL Academy programs are designed to:

Bridge the “Summer Slide”: Keep critical reading and writing skills sharp.

Master Competitive Admissions: Provide an early lead on the complex essay requirements for TJHSST and ACL.

Boost Test-Taking Confidence: Build the stamina and strategies needed for SAT and ACT success.

Specialized Summer Tracks

VIL Academy offers a curated experience for students at every stage:

ELA Foundations (Grades 3–8): Focuses on critical reading, persuasive writing, rules of grammar, and vocabulary building. The curriculum moves beyond rote memorization to foster analytical, confident writers.

English Writing Analysis and Composition (Grades 9-12): This track advances students’ knowledge of expository, argumentative, rhetorical analysis, and synthesis composition. Knowledge of each composition type is integral for success on both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

Competitive Admissions Prep (TJ/ACL): The essays for Academies of Loudoun and TJHSST are unique. This track focuses on identifying specific rubric criteria, structuring powerful narratives, and refining the "voice" required by admissions officers. The summer program prepares students for the more intensive Academies of Loudoun or Thomas Jefferson test prep courses that begin in the fall.

SAT & ACT Intensive Strategies: These tracks deconstruct the tests, focusing on strategy, timing, and elimination techniques that turn good test-takers into great ones.

The VIL Academy Standard

VIL Academy believes in the power of feedback. Every writing assignment submitted receives detailed, rubric-based review. Students receive detailed feedback on their writing the week after they submit an essay. Grades are replaced by a rubric-based roadmap for improvement, allowing students to visualize their growth trajectory. Sessions are hosted online via Microsoft Teams, providing a structured, distraction-free environment for expert instruction. Lesson material and real-time feedback are provided through Formative, a nationally-recognized, web-based, ai-powered instructional and assessment platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do VIL Academy’s online classes compare to in-person tutoring?

A: VIL Academy combines the convenience of home learning with high-level academic rigor. Class sizes are limited to facilitate teacher-to-student and student-to-student interaction. By using Microsoft Teams, students engage in a structured, distraction-free environment that mimics a classroom. A focus on digital feedback and standardized submission workflows ensures that every student receives personalized attention and a clear, chronological record of academic progress.

A: Feedback is the engine of growth. Every essay submitted is evaluated against specific, rubric-based criteria. Unlike programs that provide generic grades, VIL Academy offers detailed, actionable insights that show students exactly where to improve, allowing them to see a clear "growth trajectory" from one assignment to the next.

A: To provide other types of feedback as well as formative and summative assessments, VIL Academy uses Formative, a web-based, AI-powered platform. Formative is a leader in providing teachers the ability to “see student thinking as it happens.” Today, Formative is used by over 90% of school districts in the US and over 500,000 teachers worldwide.
